One of the central figures of 19th-century American politics, native son Martin Van Buren was the chief architect of the two-party system and a founder of the Democratic Party. Patricia McKay of the Van Buren National Historic Site, Barbara Bair of the Library of Congress, and Mark Cheathem and James Bradley of the Martin Van Buren Papers will discuss the life and times of the eighth president and the work underway to digitize, transcribe and annotate his papers.
