The Hudson Area Library and the City of Hudson Senior Center present the first in a Healthy Living series, “Balance Workshop for Seniors”, Wed., April 12, 5 - 6:30pm in the Senior Center; which is wheelchair accessible. Balance is an essential part of all movement, at every level: dance, athletics, biking, boating, hiking, and plain old walking. Like all other capacities, the “use it or lose it” maxim holds true for balance. There are many reasons why our balance deteriorates with age. But the principal cause is lifestyle. Most adults don’t do much to challenge their balance skills. So those skills atrophy. In the spirit of prevention, this workshop will introduce various ways of playing with balance that can improve postural stability, spatial body knowledge, sensory integration, agility and coordination. Please come in clothes that are comfortable to move around in. We will try some introductory balance exercises including different walks (on toes or heel-toe for instance), one-legged stands and some rolling. This class will be taught by Paul Spector who earned his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. After years of clinical experience Dr. Spector formed Pantheon and Meaningful Fitness (personalized health organizations designed to assist individuals in attaining their highest level of function). Over the past 15 years his focus has been on preventive health, behavioral change, motivation, aging, meaningful goal-setting and how to apply scientific advances to maximize both physical and psychological peak fitness. Paul dedicates his time to helping individuals attain their potential in every aspect of their lives by drawing upon his clinical experience; American Academy of Sports Medicine certified training, ongoing literature review and extensive referral network. Dr. Spector works with private clients and corporations in New York City and Hudson, NY. He is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post where he reports on the often confusing and contradictory health news. He has written on a wide range of topics including the effect of sedentary behavior on health and cognition, the microbiome, diet and depression, blood sugar levels and brain function, supplements, anti-ageing techniques, cancer detection, new research on muscle, hormesis (the health benefits of certain types of stress), how we assess risk and make decisions, what constitutes fitness and much more. The class is free and open to the public. Registration is on a first come/first serve basis. Please visit the front desk at the Hudson Area Library, or call 518.828.1792 x101 to sign up and fill out a registration form.
