The event, from 11:30 to 1, benefits the programs of Columbia County Habitat. Tickets are $40. Guests will have an opportunity to win door prizes, including an autographed copy of the book “Butter: A Rich History” and samples of specialty butters from Bimi’s, a family owned cheese shop in Chatham. Call Habitat at 518.828.0892 to make reservations, which are strongly recommended. Hudson’s Valley very own Elaine Khosrova is an independent writer who specializes in stories about food history and gastronomic culture. A former pastry chef and fellowship student at the Culinary Institute of America, Elaine holds a BS in food and nutrition. She began her career in food publishing as a test kitchen editor at Country Living magazine, followed by staff positions at Healthy Living, Classic American Home, and Santé Magazine. In 2007, she received a Gold Folio journalism award, and in 2008 she became the founding editor of culture, a national consumer magazine about specialty cheese that continues to serve cheese enthusiasts. She’s contributed to numerous national food and lifestyle publications, as well as the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Cheese. After many excursions into the world of dairy for the sake of cheese lit, Elaine left culture magazine in 2013 to begin research on her book about butter--the first and only publication (thus far) to chronicle the life and times of this beloved fat. Her butter chase took Elaine throughout the United States and to France, Ireland, India, Bhutan, and Canada. Now, she is back home in Hudson Valley to share her passion and joy for butter with you. Columbia County Habitat was founded in 1993. Habitat volunteers build affordable, sustainable houses that are sold to working families with low-interest-mortgages. Construction is now under way on the 19th and 20th homes in Valatie. Habitat also operates the ReStore, where savvy shoppers find new and gently used furniture, kitchen and bath cabinets, appliances, building materials and more at discounted prices. All ReStore proceeds support Habitat construction programs. Staffed almost entirely by volunteers, the ReStore is open from 10am to 6pm, Wednesday thru Saturday. To volunteer for Habitat, at the ReStore or on a construction site, call 518.828.0892. No experience is necessary – just time and enthusiasm. The ReStore and Habitat’s office are located at 829 Route 66, just north of the intersection with Route 9H.
