SUMMARY:Write that Story
DESCRIPTION:The four-session workshop will introduce participants to writing a short story or memoir. Stories\,\n\nwhether memoir or fiction\, often begin with a life or real-world event that fascinates and inspires\n\nthe storyteller in us all to write. The participants will engage their creative writing muscles in\n\nfour sessions through close readings of fiction and memoir\, in-class\, and weekly assignments\n\nfrom writing prompts that use prose\, visual imagery\, poetry\, and science to inspire stories.\n\nThrough immersion in inventive storytelling the stories will begin with a propelling event that\n\nincites action and move through to a surprising resolution. Empathy and the mysteries of\n\nemotions\, details of the senses\, and cause and effect will focus the writing. As we explore the\n\ninternal and external conflicts in our lives and the world through writing\, the depth of experience\n\nand the world of a storyteller will emerge. In four sessions\, the participants will have a draft of a\n\nshort story or the first pages of a memoir.\n\n\n\nEmily Rubin writes from her home in Copake\, NY. Her fiction\, poetry\, and essays have recently\n\nappeared in Wingless Dreamer\, Oldster Magazine\, Good Works Review\, and Swim Press. Her\n\ndebut novel\, STALINA\, won a publishing contract in the Amazon Debut Novel Award Contest.\n\nShe is currently working on a novel based on her experiences homesteading a tenement in the\n\nEast Village.\n\n\n\nhttp://emilyrubin.net\n\n\n\n\n\n Limited to 10 participants. Registration required. Register by emailing director@roejanlibrary.org.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered in Columbia County by the Greene County Council on the Arts dba CREATE Council for the Arts.
